Not only for the big irrigation operations but also for the small home garden, using the water intelligently to enhance the growth of the plant is also cost-effective.
For the big irrigation operations, you can optimize irrigation using sensors and timers, but when it comes to small gardens or irrigation, the small plot of land relying on the tools may even become costlier in the long run.
Instead of relying on the tools and sensors, you can follow the small water-saving tips for the garden so you don’t have to spend the extra money or face any too much technical jargon.
Here is the list of those tips you can use to save water.
Mulching
One of the cost-effective methods to conserve water is mulching.
A 2–3 inch mulching using the organic waste can block the direct sunlight reaching the soil, stop the evaporation of water, and maintain the soil temperature, also controlling the weed growth which needs more water.
Simple mulching can give you several benefits. Also, an organic mulch later becomes the compost, making the soil nutrient-rich.
Choosing a mulch:

Watering between roughly 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. gives plants time to absorb moisture before the sun peaks and temperatures rise, cutting evaporation losses dramatically compared to midday watering.
Morning watering lets the soil have the entire day to dry out under sunlight, which reduces the humid, damp conditions that fungal diseases like powdery mildew and blight thrive in.
If morning watering does not fit in your schedule, then you can consider evening watering as the second-best option available. The downside of that is, soil often stays wet overnight, creating exactly the damp conditions that encourage fungal and bacterial disease.
Midday watering, by contrast, is the worst option on both fronts. You lose the most water to evaporation and gain none of the disease-prevention benefits.
Group Plants By Watering Needs (Hydrozoning)
Hydrozoning is the clever method to grow plants to save water.
The common way to waste water is treating the whole garden plant with the same amount of water. Instead of that, make the different zones, as water-thirsty plants in one zone to provide plenty of water and the drought-tolerant plants in another zone with a much lighter watering schedule.
This lets you water each area only as much as it actually needs, instead of overwatering the whole garden to satisfy whichever plants are thirstiest.
Even without installing separate irrigation zones, immediately sketch your garden and sort plants into rough categories: high water need, moderate, and low/drought-tolerant. This mental map will change how and where you water by hand or with a hose.
Switch to Drip Irrigation
Drip irrigation is the efficient irrigation, avoiding water waste and making sure the plant gets the required amount of water.
In drip irrigation, water is directly delivered to the plant root zone slowly with the help of a network of tubing and emitters.
Compared to sprinkler irrigation, drip reduces the water requirement 50% while often improving plant health at the same time, since foliage stays dry and root zones get consistent moisture instead of feast-or-famine cycles.
For small garden operations, drip typically costs less than a single season’s water savings will offset, and larger agricultural drip systems need expert help to install the system and need bigger upfront investment — routinely paying for themselves within a few seasons through reduced water and, often, reduced labor.
Here are the key points to consider if you want to switch to the drip irrigation system:
Make sure emitter spacing matters. Match emitter flow rate and spacing to your specific crop’s root spread.
Add Filter to prevent clogging. Even municipal water carries fine sediment.
Combine with mulch. Drip lines under mulch lose almost nothing to evaporation.
Improve Your Soil
Soil plays an important factor in holding water for roots.
Different types of soil behave differently. Heavy clay soil is slow to absorb water at all, so water often pools on the surface and runs off before it soaks in, and once it does soak in, poor drainage can suffocate roots.
In sandy soil, organic matter acts like a sponge, holding moisture in the root zone longer. In clay soil, it improves structure and porosity, helping water infiltrate instead of sheeting off the surface.
To make the soil healthier, using organic mulching, it gradually breaks down and becomes compost. Both water conservation and soil health get improved.
Use Sensors
Not only big irrigation operations, now sensors are used in the small garden because guessing when to water always leads to overwatering. Instead, use the necessary sensors to monitor the soil watering needs, and according to that, you can give water.
Sensors like moisture sensors or rain sensors. A moisture sensor measures the soil moisture level, and if it drops, meaning soil needs watering, you can install the soil moisture sensor in the root zone of the plant to measure the plant watering requirements.
Similarly, rain sensors detect the moisture or the rainfall in the air; some rain sensors even operate using the internet to detect the rainfall to make the irrigation decisions.
This single change can prevent the single biggest source of garden water waste: irrigating on autopilot regardless of whether the soil is already moist from recent rain or cooler weather.
Collect Rain Water
The one main reason to collect the rain water is it is free and easily available.
Even if you collect the 50-gallon rain water from the rooftop, it can cover up the small garden watering needs during the dry months.
Install the rain barrel to collect the rain water from the rooftop using the pipes. A single moderate rainstorm on an average roof can generate hundreds of gallons of runoff, most of which normally just disappears into storm drains. You can easily fix the leaks that are visible, like a broken sprinkler head, a cracked drip line, or a slowly dripping hose connection. However, leaks underground or under mulch are especially easy to miss because you don’t see standing water; you just see a bill that doesn’t match your usage assumptions.
Routinely walk over the irrigation system to check for:
- Pooling or unusually soggy patches of soil
- Misaligned or clogged spray patterns on sprinkler heads
- Hissing or dripping sounds at hose bibs, valves, and fittings
- Sections of drip line with noticeably weaker flow than the rest of the system, which can indicate a clog upstream or a break downstream
- A sudden jump in your water bill without a corresponding increase in watering
For larger irrigation systems, a simple monthly walkthrough with the system running is often enough to catch problems before they become expensive.
Water Deeply
Shallow watering trains roots to not go deeply; this creates the problem when water scarcity hits plants that are prone to dying because of a weak root system.
Shallow irrigation trains the root system to remain near the surface, which makes the plants more vulnerable to heat, since surface soil dries out and heats up faster than soil a few inches down.
Deep, infrequent watering does the opposite: it encourages roots to grow downward in search of moisture, reaching into soil layers that stay cooler and more consistently damp. Over time,
Rather than watering lightly every day, aim to water less frequently but more thoroughly, enough that moisture penetrates several inches into the soil, not just the surface crust.
Choose the Drought Tolerant Plants
Plant the local plants in the garden because they’re likely to tolerate the heat and extreme drought conditions.
Most drought-tolerant plants still need regular watering for their first season while root systems develop, after which their water needs drop substantially.
You don’t need to redesign your whole garden around drought tolerance. Start by replacing the highest-maintenance, thirstiest ornamentals, often the ones that wilt first in a heat wave, with drought-adapted alternatives, and expand from there as budget and time allow.
Reuse Household Water
Relying on the external water source over the period of time is expensive or needs extra investment.
Instead of that, you can reuse the water used in the household, like water used to wash fruit and veggies, leftover water from the bottle, and most of the water waste produced in the kitchen.
The only water you must not use in the garden is water containing laundry or dish detergent, which contains harsh chemicals and synthetic surfactants.
To optimum use of water, keep a small bucket near your kitchen sink. Pour leftover water into it throughout the day and use it for watering in the evening or next morning.
